Periodontal (gum) disease is a serious medical problem that, if left untreated, can result in more than just swollen, unsightly gums. It can cause tooth loss, bone deterioration and, in some cases, even more serious health consequences. Periodontal disease starts when bacteria found in plaque irritate the gums, causing inflammation. Known as gingivitis in these early stages, the first symptoms of periodontal disease include swollen and bleeding gums. For periodontal disease detected early, Dr. Harre and his dental hygienists have a variety of effective techniques available to reverse tissue damage. More advanced cases are referred to a periodontist.
